The UK government has allowed the import of diesel and jet fuel made from Russian crude oil, provided it is refined in third countries.
This is stated on the British government website .
The new rules will come into force on May 20 and will remain in effect indefinitely. However, the British government noted that they will be reviewed periodically and may be amended or repealed if necessary.
Separately, London issued a temporary license for the transportation of liquefied natural gas from Russia’s Sakhalin-2 and Yamal projects. The permit also covers shipping, financial, and brokerage services related to these deliveries.
The decision was made amid a sharp rise in fuel prices following the outbreak of war in the Middle East. In particular, the cost of aviation fuel in Europe more than doubled.
The average price of unleaded petrol in Britain reached 152.52p a litre on Monday, the highest since the war began, according to the RAC .
Due to the rapid rise in the price of aviation fuel, a number of airlines operating in the UK and around the world have already cancelled some flights and raised ticket prices.
The easing of sanctions effectively opens the way for aviation fuel imports from India , previously a key supplier to the UK and Europe. A significant portion of Russian crude oil is also refined in Turkey .
On the eve, European diplomats announced that the 20th package of European Union sanctions will not include a complete ban on the provision of maritime services to Russian vessels transporting oil and petroleum products.
It was previously reported that ambassadors from European Union countries agreed on a 90 billion euro loan for Ukraine and approved the 20th package of sanctions against Russia.
