Russia has lost approximately one million soldiers – killed and wounded – since the start of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

This was reported by the UK Ministry of Defense, citing intelligence data.

Approximately 250,000 Russian soldiers are likely dead or missing, Russia’s largest military loss since World War II.

In 2025 alone, Russian casualties are likely to have exceeded 200,000, with the Ukrainian General Staff reporting over 1,250 Russians killed or wounded daily. The total number of irretrievable casualties (killed, missing, and irretrievably wounded) is now likely to be between 400,000 and 500,000 servicemen.

The constant losses are placing a huge strain on the Russian military medical system and causing significant logistical problems and a shortage of medical personnel.

Despite this, the Russian command will likely continue to attempt to wear down Ukrainian forces, using numerical superiority to break through defenses and achieve tactical successes. The Russian upper leadership is likely willing to tolerate such high casualties as long as it does not negatively affect public or elite support for the war, and as long as these losses can be compensated.

As a reminder, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine stated that the Armed Forces of Ukraine have already destroyed over one million Russian occupiers , including the dead and wounded.

As reported, the enemy’s losses in manpower during the day reached 1,140 people.

Moreover, despite the huge losses, Russian advances remain extremely slow — an average of 50 meters per day, which is many times slower than in any other conflict involving Russia. In three years of full-scale invasion, Russia has occupied only 5,000 square kilometers , which CSIS calls a “meager result.”
