British Prime Minister Keir Starmer confirmed on June 22 that he is stepping down as leader of the Labour Party. However, he will remain head of government until a new leader is elected.

The Prime Minister noted that he had previously spoken to the King to inform him of his decision.
He will step down as Prime Minister after the election of a new Labour Party leader.
Starmer stressed that after finishing his work in “the most important job in the country” he would devote more time to “the most important work” of his life.
Starmer said he “honorably” accepted that he was no longer the best person to lead the Labour Party at the next election.
“My party is now asking the question: am I the best candidate to lead us in the next general election? I have heard the answer from our parliamentary faction to this question and I accept this answer with dignity,” he said.
“To be the best husband I can be to my wonderful wife Vic, who has been my pillar of strength in good times and bad,” Starmer said, holding back emotion.
The Prime Minister also listed the achievements of his government over two years of work, including support for Ukraine in the war against Russia.
He added that he would remain as prime minister until a new Labour Party leader was elected.
