British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he had received confirmation of Russian interference in the 2016 Brexit referendum. He also warned of similar attempts to influence politics in France and Germany.
This is reported by the BBC.
According to Burnham, after arriving at Downing Street, he separately inquired about whether there was Russian interference in the 2016 vote.
“I asked the question when I came to Downing Street: was there Russian interference in the 2016 referendum? And I got a clear answer – yes, there was,” he said.
At the same time, the Prime Minister did not specify who gave him this assessment, what evidence it was based on, and what the scale and mechanisms of the interference were. He also did not claim that Russian actions determined the outcome of the referendum.
Burnham emphasized that, in his opinion, the British authorities did not speak openly enough to the public about attempts by foreign states to influence political processes.
He also said that during a recent meeting with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, he discussed Russian influence on European politics. According to Burnham, voters in Germany and France need to understand that some political processes can be fueled by external interference.
In 2020, the parliamentary Intelligence and Security Committee criticized the British government for failing to conduct a full assessment of possible Russian interference in Brexit. At that time, there was no final conclusion about Moscow’s influence on the referendum result.
Russia has traditionally denied interfering in the elections and referendums of other states.
