Bucharest joined the PURL mechanism: how much will it allocate for arming Ukraine?
Romania has joined the international PURL mechanism, which provides for financing the purchase of American weapons for the needs of Ukraine. The Romanian government has made a corresponding decision.
This was announced by Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Coi on the social network X.
According to her, Bucharest has confirmed its participation in the program, providing a financial contribution of 50 million euros. The funds will be allocated within the budget limits set for 2025.
The Foreign Minister stressed that supporting PURL is Romania’s contribution to strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities, which in turn creates the conditions for achieving stable and lasting peace. She also emphasized that participation in the initiative, which operates under the coordination of the United States, contributes to strengthening security in the region and is consistent with the country’s international obligations as a NATO member and a strategic partner of the United States.
It was previously reported that Portugal is also ready to transfer a similar amount — 50 million euros — to the PURL mechanism.
In total, since the launch of this NATO initiative, 21 states have joined it, and the total amount of contributions to the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine has already exceeded $4 billion.
As a reminder, in January 2026, Romania will begin receiving and coordinating the transit of military aid to Ukraine within the framework of the newly created NATO logistics hub . The new center will operate in parallel with the hub in Poland and should strengthen the Alliance’s capabilities to supply weapons to Ukraine.
As reported, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced additional economic assistance to Ukraine . This is $2.5 billion, which should help unblock financing from international financial institutions.
