Bulgaria is not prepared to support the 21st package of European Union sanctions against Russia due to the proposal to include the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, on the sanctions list.

This was reported by European Pravda, citing two EU diplomats familiar with the progress of the negotiations.

According to sources, the issue was discussed during a meeting of EU ambassadors last week. The Bulgarian side stated that it considers sanctions against Patriarch Kirill interference in religious affairs.

Furthermore, several EU member states, including Bulgaria, have expressed reservations regarding the energy component of the new sanctions package. Specifically, this concerns the proposal to freeze the maximum price of Russian oil to prevent its rise.

Discussions on the 21st sanctions package will continue at the meeting of the EU Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREPER), scheduled for June 17.

The European Union has approved another round of sanctions against Russia. The new restrictions target Russian military-industrial complex enterprises, companies linked to the shadow fleet, the oil business, and Kremlin propagandists.
