The US Embassy in Canada has accused Canadian politicians of trying to influence the US Congressional elections scheduled for November 3.
This is reported by the BBC.
The American Embassy has published statements by Canadian officials that, in its opinion, indicate intentions to influence political processes in the United States.
In particular, Washington drew attention to the contacts of Canadian government officials with representatives of the Democratic Party and statements regarding the introduction of tariffs on American goods.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the accusations, stressing that it was the United States that first imposed trade restrictions against Canada, and Ottawa’s actions were a response to those decisions.
“We responded to this to protect Canadian jobs, protect Canadian companies and grow our economy,” Carney said.
Canadian Industry Minister Melanie Joly confirmed meetings with American politicians. At the same time, she explained that her trips to the United States were aimed at attracting investment from American companies.
Previously, US Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra also warned that Washington was monitoring the actions of Canadian politicians ahead of the election.
As a reminder, on October 14, it became known that the Donald Trump administration did not invite OSCE observers to the US Congressional elections . This is the first time in more than 20 years that Washington has abandoned this practice.
In addition, new assessments of the political situation ahead of the congressional elections appeared on October 17. One of the main topics of pre-election disputes remains Trump’s economic policy and trade tariffs.
