A meeting of foreign ministers of the G7 countries will begin in the Canadian city of Niagara-on-the-Lake on Tuesday. The main topics are the war in Ukraine, security in the Middle East, and challenges in the Arctic.

Reuters reports this.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand said the summit was taking place “in an era of geopolitical instability.” She said the G7 countries were seeking to develop a coherent strategy for peace. She noted the constructive role of the United States, emphasizing that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had become a “very constructive member” of the G7.

Anand expects the meeting to yield “focused conversations” about steps toward peace in Ukraine and the Middle East.

Other topics of discussion include assistance to Ukraine during the winter period: support for energy infrastructure, food security, and long-term reconstruction.

Expert John Kirton , founder of the G7 Research Group at the University of Toronto, believes that this year’s meeting could be more productive than the previous one.

“The fact that President Trump won’t be there will definitely help. They won’t have to watch every facial expression or be cautious about any of his tirades,” Kirton said.

He also noted that the G7 membership has been almost completely renewed this year: Anand was appointed in May, Rubio in February, and the most experienced among the participants remains Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani , who has held the position since 2022.

As previously reported, the G7+ Energy Coordination Group held an urgent meeting after Russia’s massive nighttime attack on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.

Recall, Macron threatened to impose strong sanctions against Russia on the sidelines of the G7 summit.
