Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has rejected US President Donald Trump’s decision to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America.”
The head of the Canadian government wrote about this on the social network X.
Carney stressed that the name of the lake has a centuries-old history. It comes from the Wendati word Ontari’io , which means “beautiful lake” or “great lake.”
According to the Prime Minister, this name is over 400 years old — it arose before the creation of the Canadian Confederation and the declaration of independence of the United States.
“Canadians know that calling a spade a spade means calling this Lake Ontario – then, now and always,” Carney said.
In particular, he also noted that the United States is changing, including its trade relations, foreign policy, national landmarks, and water names.
It was previously reported that US President Donald Trump announced his intention to take up the names of oceans after renaming the bay and lake. In particular, he mentioned the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
