The Kyiv Court of Appeal on Monday, October 13, ruled in the high-profile case of Mercedes driver Oleksandr Khilyk, who is suspected of brutally beating a cyclist. The court partially satisfied the complaint of his defense lawyers and left the man in custody, but allowed him to post bail – 5 million 2 thousand 200 hryvnias.
This was reported by Ukrinform with reference to the broadcast of the court hearing.
“The defense’s request is partially granted. To apply a preventive measure in the form of detention to Oleksandr Volodymyrovych Khilyk with the possibility of posting a bail of 5 million 2 thousand 200 UAH,” the judge announced.
The defense requested that the preventive measure be changed to a personal commitment. Lawyer Olena Kononets insisted that the Podilskyi District Court’s decision to arrest was “illegal and unfounded,” as Khilyk had no previous criminal record, fulfilled all court requirements, surrendered his passport, and had no contact with the victim or witnesses.
Recall that in the Podilskyi district of Kyiv, a Mercedes driver hit a cyclist several times because he was told to stop on a bike path. The 40-year-old Kyiv resident received serious injuries and is in hospital in serious condition.
Later, 44-year-old Kyiv businessman Oleksandr Khilyk explained in court why he left the scene without providing assistance to the victim.
