China has refused to comply with Washington’s ultimatum and has said it will continue to import oil from Russia and Iran, despite the threat of 100% tariffs from the US. This position of Beijing directly affects the financing of the Russian military machine and creates new challenges for Ukraine in the war with the aggressor.

This is reported by the Associated Press .

According to journalists, after two days of trade talks in Stockholm, China’s Foreign Ministry said that the country “will always ensure its energy security based on national interests” and “resolutely safeguard its sovereignty.”

Washington has demanded that Beijing stop buying oil from Russia and Iran in order to reduce funding for their militaries. However, China has taken a tough stance, indicating that pressure and coercion from the United States will not change its course.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant acknowledged that the Chinese side is a “tough negotiator” and is ready to pay even 100% tariffs in order not to give in. He noted that this issue remains the main obstacle to concluding a new trade agreement.

Analysts doubt that US President Donald Trump will implement the threat of tariffs, as it could destroy the negotiation process and complicate his efforts to reach a “big deal” with Xi Jinping in the fall.

Experts believe that Beijing views the purchase of Russian oil as a strategically important resource that comes at reduced prices and is not going to give it up even under pressure. At the same time, China, according to observers, may use this issue as leverage to obtain additional concessions from the United States.

For Ukraine, this position of the PRC means preserving a significant source of revenue for the Russian budget, which directly finances the war against the Ukrainian people.

It is known that US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant warned China that purchases of Russian oil would lead to the imposition of high tariffs.

Earlier,US President Donald Trump said that Russia has 10 days to reach an agreement on the war in Ukraine . If it refuses, Washington will impose new economic restrictions, including tariffs.

By the way, US President Donald Trump said that he is no longer interested in meeting with Russian dictator Putin.

Recall, on July 28, US President Donald Trump said that he plans to shorten the deadline for Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to reach a ceasefire in Ukraine. The day before, the Donald Trump administration announced that it would impose secondary sanctions and tariffs against Russia if a ceasefire is not achieved in Ukraine within 50 days.
