The Chinese government has signaled that it may consider participating in a peacekeeping mission in Ukraine.
This was reported by Welt, citing diplomatic sources in the EU.
According to the publication, Beijing confirmed its readiness to send its contingent, but only if the mission is deployed on the basis of a United Nations mandate.
In Brussels, the stance has drawn mixed reviews. Some diplomats believe that involving countries from the Global South, particularly China, could strengthen the idea of a peacekeeping mission. At the same time, others warn that Beijing’s involvement could carry risks, including becoming a tool for intelligence gathering and promoting pro-Russian interests under the guise of peacekeepers.
A separate challenge is that the majority of EU countries do not support the option of introducing a peacekeeping mission through a UN mandate.
Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukraine does not consider China as a possible guarantor of security after the end of the war with Russia.
During a meeting with US President Donald Trump in Alaska, Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin suggested China as a country that could provide security guarantees for Ukraine.
