China has called the demands of the US and Russia to join nuclear disarmament “unreasonable and unrealistic.”

This was stated by the spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, Guo Jiakun, according to Reuters.

Ahead of the statement, US President Donald Trump said he had discussed nuclear disarmament with Vladimir Putin. He would also like to see Beijing participate in the process.

A spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry emphasized that the nuclear capabilities of China and the United States are not comparable.

“It is unreasonable and unrealistic to demand that China start trilateral nuclear disarmament talks with the US and Russia,” Guo Jiakun said.

He also added that China strictly adheres to the principle of no first use of nuclear weapons and adheres to a defensive nuclear strategy. Guo also noted that Beijing has no plans to engage in an arms race with any other country.

“Countries with the largest nuclear arsenals should be the first to fulfill their special priority responsibilities on nuclear disarmament,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman added.

Earlier, Donald Trump said that he would like to prepare a new Strategic Offensive Arms Reduction Treaty between the United States and Russia .
