Trade between China and Russia is rapidly losing momentum. In October, Chinese exports to Russia fell by 22%, the steepest drop in eight months.
This data was published by Reuters with reference to the Chinese customs service.
China’s exports to Russia last month totaled 60.46 billion yuan (about $8.5 billion), the seventh consecutive month of decline. Meanwhile, imports from Russia grew by just 2.5%, so even there the pace is slowing.
Total trade turnover between the countries in the first ten months of the year decreased by almost 9%, to 1.31 trillion yuan.
Analysts note that after a record-breaking 2024, when Beijing and Moscow actively praised a “partnership without borders,” the economic reality has changed dramatically.
China is feeling the pressure of American sanctions and trade tariffs, while the Russian economy is choking under its own restrictions and lack of demand.
“Sanctions are working. Russia is losing even those partners who helped it survive yesterday,” experts from Asian markets comment.
According to them, a further decline in exports from China could be a worrying signal for the Kremlin: even friendly economic ties can no longer withstand the impact of isolation and restrictions.
As reported, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that as a result of international sanctions, Russia will have a budget deficit of at least $100 billion in 2026, and according to optimistic forecasts, up to $130 billion.
