The night before Christmas has long been considered a special time when the line between the past and the future seems to blur. In folk tradition, it was a period of inner waiting and silence, when one was allowed to look ahead and try to unravel one’s own destiny.
That is why Christmas Eve and the days after it had a special meaning for unmarried girls. It was believed that at this time one could learn about future love, weddings, or important life changes. According to tradition, Christmas fortune-telling was carried out for two weeks – from December 24 until Epiphany.
“Pryamy” has prepared folk fortune-telling for Christmas and how you can find out the answer to your question on the night of the 24th to the 25th.
Fortune telling on a betrothed with a comb
One of the oldest and most common rituals was fortune-telling before going to bed. The girl would comb her hair, thinking about her future chosen one, and then put the comb under her pillow with the words:
“The doomed one, come to me in a dream and comb my hair.”
It was believed that the image of a man who appeared at night and touched the hair symbolized the future husband. According to legend, after this ritual, one could not talk to anyone until morning, so as not to “break” the sign.
Fortune telling on wax
Fortune telling with melted wax was particularly popular. It was considered accurate, as the wax supposedly took the form of a clue from fate. A small piece of candle was melted and quickly poured into cold water, after which the frozen figure was carefully examined.
The following symbols were most often interpreted:
ring – a quick wedding or a serious relationship;
heart – mutual love;
stars – success, recognition or luck;
road or waves – travel or change;
flower – pleasant news and fulfillment of desires.
If the shape was unclear, they looked at the shadow from the wax in the light of a candle – it was this shadow that could provide the answer.
Fortune telling on needles
Metal was considered a strong conductor of energy in folk beliefs. For this ritual, two needles were taken, greased with wax and carefully placed on the surface of the water, making a wish.
The result was interpreted as follows:
the needles are connected – the wish will come true quickly;
stayed close – it takes time;
They broke up – it’s worth postponing what you planned.
Fortune telling on grains
Grain symbolized life and abundance. For simple fortune telling, they would take a bowl of cereal, ask a question with a “yes” or “no” answer, dip their hand in, and count a handful of grains:
an even number means the answer is “yes”;
odd – “no”.
Fortune telling on an apple
The apple was used on Christmas Eve as a symbol of wisdom and foresight. The fruit was cut exactly in half. If a clear star of seeds formed inside, the year promised to be happy. A damaged core or voids indicated possible difficulties, and a large number of seeds indicated financial prosperity.
Whatever the outcome of Christmas fortune-telling, people have always emphasized: signs only indicate the direction, and the real choice and future depend on the person himself. Christmas night only opens the door to new opportunities.
