Christmas Truce: German Chancellor Announces Possible Scenario

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he does not rule out the possibility of a temporary ceasefire at Christmas in Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Speaking to the media in Berlin, Merz noted that the idea of a Christmas truce is currently being considered, which could allow for humanitarian pauses and alleviate the situation of the civilian population.

According to the Chancellor, Germany plans to approach the Russian side with a corresponding initiative for this. He emphasized that this is not about ending the war, but about a temporary step that could reduce tension and create space for further negotiations.

Merz stressed that any ceasefire arrangements must guarantee Ukraine’s security and not jeopardize its sovereignty. He also pointed to the importance of the participation of international partners who can ensure compliance with a possible ceasefire.

As previously reported, the second round of negotiations between the Ukrainian and American delegations has concluded in Berlin.
