CIA warns Poland about possible Russian provocation against banks — media

Russia could have investigated in detail the location of submarine cables that support international banking systems and potentially prepared provocations against financial infrastructure.

According to Polish journalists, the warnings from the US Central Intelligence Agency concerned possible actions by the Russian Federation against critical infrastructure. This concerns, in particular, an underwater telecommunications network that ensures data exchange between international banks.
According to sources, the Russian side has studied the routes of cables connecting Europe and North America, as well as passing through the Baltic Sea between Scandinavia and Poland and between Great Britain and continental Europe.
American intelligence has called for the banking system to be prepared for possible disruptions and critical loads. In the event of damage to key data transmission lines, international interbank exchange could be at risk.
About $10 trillion in financial transactions pass through these cables every day.
At the same time, the system provides backup routes: if one of the cables is damaged, traffic can automatically be redirected through other channels. Despite this, intelligence agencies consider the scenario of large-scale disruptions to be real.
According to journalists, Polish intelligence services are also preparing for possible more aggressive actions by Russia than traditional espionage operations.
Possible scenarios include staging attacks, including using drones to create the impression of a strike from NATO territory. Another option is to create false digital traces in cyberspace to shift responsibility for provocations to European states.
Recently, European Union and NATO countries have been reporting increased threats from Russia.
At the same time, American intelligence agencies warn that the Russian Federation could have studied the routes of underwater communication lines in the Baltic Sea and the Atlantic, which are important for the functioning of the international financial system.
It was previously reported that a Russian Mi-8 military helicopter violated Polish airspace near the border with the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation on September 23. In response, the Polish military scrambled fighter jets.
In addition, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said that Warsaw would not make a “big deal” about the violation of the country’s airspace by a Russian Mi-8 if Moscow admits the mistake and apologizes.
The journalists also described several possible scenarios in which Russia could try to test NATO’s readiness for confrontation. These include sabotage of underwater infrastructure, covert operations, seizure of strategic territories, and an offensive in the Suwalki Corridor area.
