North Korean leader Kim Jong-un fully supports Russian dictator Vladimir Putin in his war against Ukraine, but the benefits he receives from it are limited.
This is reported by the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, citing the work of researcher Olena Huseynova from the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul.
According to the study, North Korea provided the Russian army with military aid worth up to $9.8 billion — a third of the country’s annual economic power.
In particular, Pyongyang sent 15,000 soldiers to Russia, up to 6.7 million artillery shells, up to 1.24 million mortar shells, up to 878,300 missiles for multiple launch rocket systems, up to 248 KN-23/24 ballistic missiles, and up to 794 howitzers and launchers.
Kim Jong-un expected food supplies from Putin, as well as the transfer of strategic weapons-related technologies.
However, the Kremlin has not compensated North Korea for its assistance in a sufficient amount. The cost of direct supplies from Russia to North Korea is about $1.2 billion.
Moscow mainly supplied Pyongyang with food, oil, and a small number of air defense systems, GPS jammers, and probably aircraft.
“North Korea has provided Russia with enormous amounts of military support. However, Moscow seems to be responding slowly and in a limited way,” the researcher noted.
It is reported that Kim Jong-un has already complained to Putin, but he has only expressed dissatisfaction in response. Also, according to South Korean lawmaker Park Song-won, who is a member of the intelligence committee, the North Korean leader is disappointed by the lack of prospects for long-term relations with Russia.
North Korea has previously stated its readiness to assist Russia in the military sphere if the need arises. This was discussed during a meeting between the leaders of the two countries, Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un.
As a reminder, Ukrainian intelligence has discovered that North Korea is continuously supplying Russia with huge amounts of ammunition , from artillery shells to ballistic missiles and multiple launch rocket systems, using sea, rail and air routes. Up to several million shells are supplied per month through just one targeted channel.
As reported, North Korea is planning to transfer up to 6,000 troops and equipment to Russia in the near future.
