Ukraine has submitted an official request to Poland to extradite a Russian archaeologist detained in Warsaw who was conducting illegal excavations in temporarily occupied Crimea.

This was reported by RMF24.

The application for the transfer of Aleksander B. has already been sent to the Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office.

Polish investigators will first assess the formal requirements of the request and then check whether it complies with the provisions of the 1957 European Convention on Extradition.

In addition, a process will take place to determine whether there are compelling reasons for the inadmissibility of transferring the detainee to Ukraine.

“These include double criminality, proceedings conducted in our country, or, for example, granting asylum,” the publication noted.

Subsequently, the prosecutors will formulate their position and submit it to the court along with the Ukrainian motion.

The prosecutor’s office’s position will likely include a request to extend the suspect’s pre-trial detention, which ends on January 13.

The final decision on Ukraine’s request will be made by a Polish court.
