Cosmic light in the dark sky: when to watch the amazing Perseid show over Ukraine

On the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, August 13, the peak of one of the most famous meteor showers, the Perseids, is expected over the territory of Ukraine.

Every August, Earth passes through a trail of dust and debris left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle. These particles, mostly microscopic in size, enter the atmosphere at speeds of up to 59 km/s, causing flashes of light—these are what we see as “shooting stars.”
The Perseids are considered one of the brightest and most active meteor showers, and under favorable conditions, up to a hundred meteors can be seen per hour.
However, this year, moonlight will make observing difficult. A full moon, 80% illuminated, will appear in the sky on the evening of August 12 and will remain there until almost dawn. Because of this, only the brightest meteors will be visible.
