Nepal’s President Ram Chandra Paudel has resigned amid the country’s worst unrest in years. His decision was a response to the destabilization of the situation and the rapid escalation of the political crisis.
This is reported by India Today.
Prime Minister H.P. Sharma Oli also resigned the day before. In his statement, he said he was resigning “in view of the adverse situation in the country” to allow for a new political solution in accordance with the constitution.
The unrest was sparked by a social media blackout. Thousands of people, mostly young people, took to the streets of Kathmandu, accusing the authorities of attempting to impose digital censorship.
At least 19 people have died in clashes with security forces. Protesters are seizing government buildings, and footage has surfaced online of the finance minister being grabbed, driven into a river, and beaten.
The situation in the capital remains tense. The government does not rule out the introduction of a state of emergency.
As we will recall, large-scale protests erupted in Nepal after the government banned social media, which quickly escalated into bloody riots. In the capital Kathmandu, police opened fire on demonstrators, killing more than 20 people and injuring hundreds. Youth are demanding an end to corruption and censorship, while the country’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli announced his resignation, which caused a deep political crisis.
