Russian director and propagandist Nikita Mikhalkov publicly accused Azerbaijan of being “ungrateful” for its colonial past and attempted to justify Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In response, Azerbaijani journalists sharply criticized the artist, calling him a “court jester” and a servant of every new regime in the Kremlin.

Amid growing tensions between Russia and Azerbaijan, a wave of anti-Azerbaijani propaganda has begun in Russia. Nikita Mikhalkov, a famous director and one of the public mouthpieces of Kremlin policy, has joined in.

In a new episode of his program “Besogon,” Mikhalkov accused Azerbaijan of “ingratefulness” towards Russia, recalling Moscow’s “huge role” in resolving the Karabakh conflict. He also tried to justify the war against Ukraine, calling it “liberation” from “Bandera Nazis.”

The reasons for Mikhalkov’s anger were:

  • criticism from Azerbaijan regarding the killing of Azerbaijanis in Yekaterinburg;
  • demands to punish those responsible for the Azerbaijani plane crash in the 1990s;
  • support for Ukraine’s sovereignty by President Ilham Aliyev;
  • Aliyev’s words at the Shushyn Media Forum, where he advised Ukrainians to “never agree to the occupation of their land.”

These statements were drawn to the attention of Ukrainian MP Oleksiy Honcharenko, who called Mikhalkov a “court jester” who, when Russia suffers defeats, tries to shout imperial slogans louder, hiding his fear of reality.

A strong response to Mikhalkov’s propaganda was given by journalists from the Azerbaijani publication Caliber.Az . In the article, they sharply criticized the director.

“Mikhalkov is a typical nomenclature sycophant who has been serving any government for decades. He praised Gorbachev, Yeltsin, Putin. And for each new ruler, he betrayed the previous one. He is a real court jester of the Kremlin,” the publication says.

Journalists also emphasized that Mikhalkov uses his authority to promote chauvinistic and colonial rhetoric, ignoring Russia’s crimes in the post-Soviet space.

According to Ukrainian journalist Dmitry Gordon, Azerbaijani journalists analyzed each of Mikhalkov’s statements in detail, demonstrating his pathetic attempt to cover up Moscow’s aggressive policy with propaganda.
