Covert mobilization is increasing in Russia due to lack of people willing to fight – media

There is a growing number of cases in Russia where men are being detained and forced to sign contracts with the Ministry of Defense to be sent to the war against Ukraine. Human rights activists are receiving such complaints from various regions of the Russian Federation.

In July and August, human rights activists recorded complaints of forced mobilization in Udmurtia, Primorye, Irkutsk, Ryazan, and Arkhangelsk regions, Buryatia, as well as in the temporarily occupied territory of Donetsk region.

The organization “Walk in the Forest” has received 18 such appeals in two months. The cases were reported by residents of the Penza, Amur, Orenburg and Jewish Autonomous Regions, the Krasnodar and Khabarovsk Territories, as well as Izhevsk, Omsk, Blagoveshchensk and Ulan-Ude.

The organization “Call to Conscience” received another 18 complaints about forced recruitment in July and August.

According to human rights activists, the Russian authorities are primarily trying to recruit representatives of socially vulnerable groups. These include people with addictions and mental disorders, single and elderly men, as well as people with a criminal past.

In addition, Russians who have debts, are under investigation, or have lost their driver’s licenses are under pressure.

As the publication notes, it is becoming increasingly difficult for the Russian authorities to find people willing to volunteer to go to war, so the pressure on potential contract soldiers is increasing.
