Cuba experienced a massive power outage on March 16 due to a failure in the national power grid caused by the blockade of oil supplies from the United States.

Reuters reports this.

“The country is largely dependent on oil for electricity generation, and the de facto blockade of fuel supplies is leading to periodic blackouts,” Cuban authorities said.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump cut off Venezuelan oil supplies to Cuba and threatened to impose tariffs on any country that supplies oil to the Cuban side. Cuba said on March 13 that it had begun talks with Washington to stabilize the energy situation.

State-owned operator UNE said that power companies are working to restore power supply across the country. “No faults have been detected in the power units that were operating at the time of the grid shutdown,” the company added.

As a reminder, anti-government protests erupted in the Cuban city of Moron over power outages and food shortages . During the demonstration, protesters attacked the Communist Party office and several government institutions.

As previously reported, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio sharply criticized the Cuban government, calling it a “big problem.” At the same time, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel declared his readiness to send the army to Venezuela amid US actions in the region.

By the way, previously, the administration of President Donald Trump was actively looking for insiders in the Cuban government who could help influence the island’s authorities and conclude an agreement that would allow the communist regime to be weakened this year.
