At least 39 people have died after two high-speed trains collided in central Spain. The accident occurred on the morning of October 28 near the towns of Los Ebenes and Urda in the province of Toledo. After the impact, the carriages derailed and passengers were forced to escape through the windows of the damaged carriages.

This is reported by the Spanish newspaper El País.

Hundreds of people were on both trains at the time of the collision. According to regional authorities, there were 147 passengers on the Iryo train and 397 on the AVE train, operated by state-owned Renfe. The circumstances of the accident are being investigated.

According to preliminary reports, a Renfe train may have crashed into the rear of the Iryo. The collision caused two of the Iryo’s carriages to derail and slide down a slope. In total, at least four carriages overturned.

“We cut the fence to clear the area and provided assistance to people with the first-aid kits we had with us,” he said.

Spanish television journalist Miguel Angel Perez Laguna, who was among the passengers on the Renfe train, said he felt a very strong impact, causing the front of the train to lift into the air.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed his condolences to the dead and injured and said he was in contact with the transport minister. Emergency services were on the scene, assisting passengers and coordinating rescue efforts.

Due to the accident, the railway infrastructure operator Adif has suspended high-speed train services between Madrid, Ciudad Real and Andalusia in both directions. It is not yet known when services will resume.

According to ABC, citing sources in the Spanish Ministry of Transport, one of the possible causes of the accident could have been human error while troubleshooting the signaling system. However, the official cause of the collision has not yet been established.
