Debate on sanctions against Russia begins in the US House of Representatives

The US House of Representatives has begun debate on Lindsey Graham’s bill on sanctions against Russia and Iran. The final vote on the document is expected today, September 16, at around 10:45 p.m. Kyiv time.

This was reported by Radio Liberty’s Washington correspondent Alex Raufoglou.

At the beginning of the debate, Republican Michael McCaul said that the new sanctions should increase pressure on Moscow and force Russian leader Vladimir Putin to sit at the negotiating table.

According to him, the US should use available tools to pressure Russia.

The House of Representatives held a procedural vote the day before, allowing the bill to proceed to consideration. The decision was supported by 214 congressmen, with 211 opposed.

The House is now holding a debate, after which a final vote on the document is to take place.

The bill would tighten sanctions on Russia and Iran. It also gives the US president additional powers to impose tariffs on countries that buy Russian energy or help Moscow circumvent sanctions.

The US Senate has already passed the bill. If the House of Representatives approves the Senate version without changes, the document will complete its passage through Congress and can go to the US President for signature.
