Three Democratic U.S. senators — Jeanne Shaheen, Elizabeth Warren, and Chris Coons — have called for an investigation into the Trump administration’s handling of sanctions against Russia, demanding an explanation for why new restrictions on the Kremlin have not been imposed in the past five months.

This is stated in the material of The Hill.

In a joint statement, the senators emphasized that President Trump failed to seize the opportunity to increase pressure on Russia, despite all the levers at his disposal.

“We intend to find out why this opportunity to influence the war was wasted,” the document says.

With the start of the new presidential term, lawmakers say, the White House has not only stopped initiating new sanctions but also weakened some of those already in place. This, they say, has allowed the Kremlin to continue its aggression against Ukraine.

Democrats also accuse the Trump administration of blocking regular updates to sanctions lists and export control measures, a policy they say has led to an increase in illegal arms shipments to Russia from China and other countries.

In their address, the senators call for the immediate restoration of sanctions pressure on Moscow, synchronization of restrictions with European partners, and prevention of further weakening of the regime.

“Putin must clearly understand: the longer his aggression continues, the more expensive it will be for him. And only a joint position of the US and the G7 countries can bring a just peace closer,” the authors of the initiative stated.

As a reminder, US President Donald Trump, along with lifting sanctions against Syria, also removed some Russian banks, institutions, and individuals from the “blacklists.”

As reported, Donald Trump’s reluctance to impose new sanctions against Russia is helping it replenish its military budget.

By the way, commenting on the position of Donald Trump’s team, United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the United States is not currently planning to impose new sanctions against Russia, as it seeks to leave room for possible peace negotiations.

It should be noted that Republican Senator Lindsey Graham stated that US President Donald Trump is convinced that the time has come to pass a bill on new sanctions against Russia.
