Demanded a bribe: police detained the mayor of Berdychiv

The mayor of Berdychiv, Zhytomyr region, was detained on suspicion of extorting a bribe.

Spokesperson for the Strategic Investigations Department of the National Police, Nataliya Kalynovska, confirmed the detention of an official of the Berdychiv City Council, but did not provide his name or position.

“Yes, we confirm the fact of the exposure of an official of the Berdychiv City Council. So far, procedural actions are underway on the spot,” she said.

As it became known, the official was detained for extortion and receiving illegal benefits.

The Berdychiv District Police Department promised that law enforcement officers would provide information about the incident later.

Earlier, Rio-Berdychiv was informed about the detention of the mayor of Berdychiv.

“Hundreds of car drivers driving along Zhytomyrska Street, near the railway crossing, can see the Berdychiv city mayor standing in handcuffs,” the report says.

According to preliminary information, a flash drive was found in the official’s pocket. Law enforcement officers seized it. They also found a wad of American dollars in the car.
