Polish President Karol Nawrocki said he had a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the eve of the NATO summit in Ankara. This was their first contact after the recent diplomatic scandal between the two countries.
The Polish leader stated this after arriving at the NATO summit in Ankara, reports “European Truth”.
According to Navrotsky, during the leaders’ dinner, he spoke with many heads of state, including the President of Ukraine.
“Yesterday, during dinner, I spoke with many world leaders. Among them was, of course, President Zelensky. Maybe there will be another opportunity today to talk,” the Polish president said.
At the same time, Navrotsky stressed that despite the existing bilateral contradictions between Kyiv and Warsaw, the dialogue must continue due to the common threat from Russia.
“It seems natural to me when neighboring states that share a common enemy, which is Russia, maintain dialogue, regardless of certain bilateral tensions,” he noted.
The Polish president also reiterated his position on historical issues, in particular the assessment of the activities of the UPA, but emphasized that this should not become an obstacle to contacts between the countries.
It should be noted that the conversation in Ankara was the first publicly known meeting between Volodymyr Zelensky and Karol Navrocki after the high-profile scandal related to calls to strip the Ukrainian president of the Polish Order of the White Eagle.
As a reminder, Polish President Karol Nawrocki signed a decision to strip Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of the Order of the White Eagle . In response, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Szybiga said he would return his Polish state award.
As reported, Poland will not support Ukraine’s accession to the European Union unless Kyiv reconsiders its approach to honoring OUN and UPA figures, in particular Stepan Bandera.
It should be noted that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine called on Poland to exercise restraint after the Sejm considered a bill that would equate the propaganda of the ideology of the OUN and UPA with the propaganda of Nazism and communism.
In addition, the Office of the President of Poland Karol Nawrocki stated that the draft law on the creation of the National Pantheon adopted by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine is “actions of an escalating nature.”
By the way, the head of the Presidential Office, Kyrylo Budanov, stated that on the eve of the anniversary of the Volyn tragedy, July 11, new escalating steps in relations with Ukraine may take place in Poland.
