The European Commission has said that sanctions against Russia will remain in place and will be strengthened as long as the aggression against Ukraine continues. Brussels emphasizes that any negotiations without a real ceasefire will not change Europe’s position.
This is reported by Ukrinform .
It is noted that during a briefing in Brussels, European Commission spokeswoman Arianna Podesta emphasized that Moscow has only one way to avoid economic pressure – to end the war.
“If Russia does not want sanctions imposed against it, it should simply stop its aggression against Ukraine. As long as the bloodshed in Ukraine continues, Europe will continue its economic pressure on Russia,” Podesta said.
According to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the EU is preparing a 19th package of sanctions, which they plan to present in early September. European leaders are convinced that the sanctions have a double effect, as they weaken the Kremlin’s ability to wage war and at the same time push it to real negotiations.
“Sanctions are working. They are biting the Russian economy. We need to continue to put absolute pressure on Russia to stop its military aggression,” the spokeswoman stressed.
It is worth adding that the issue of further pressure on Russia was one of the key topics of the meeting in Washington, where talks were held between US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders. The EU confirms that the sanctions policy will not be relaxed even in the context of negotiations on the settlement of the war.
“Europe will continue to apply this pressure until we achieve a just and lasting peace for Ukraine,” said Arianna Podesta.
Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the EU plans to adopt a new package of sanctions against Russia in September 2025.
It was reported earlier that the approval of a new, 19th package of EU sanctions against Russia due to its war against Ukraine is expected next month.
At the same time, US President Donald Trump said he did not seek to impose new sanctions against Russia , preferring diplomacy and negotiations. At the same time, he emphasized his readiness to apply economic restrictions if the situation requires it.
