“Discussing Russian whims”: what the peace plan really hides

Ukraine has been dragged into discussions of peace initiatives that are essentially based on Russian proposals, despite the existence of its own settlement plan. Even if these agreements are called “Russian-American”, their basis reflects Moscow’s interests.
This was stated by Volodymyr Viatrovych, a member of parliament from the European Solidarity faction, on the air of “Pryamoy”.
According to the politician, unfortunately, the Ukrainian side is forced to react to someone else’s agenda, rather than promoting its own. “In fact, unfortunately, we are really discussing Russian initiatives, no matter what they are called, there are Russian, Russian-American, American-Russian. We see that this is still a Russian narrative, Russian whims, which even after the changes… they are still taken as a basis,” Viatrovych emphasized.
He also pointed to the indecision of American partners, who, in his opinion, do not demonstrate a desire to “put Russia in its place”, which only increases its appetites. The MP is convinced that in order to turn the situation around, Ukraine needs to impose its own narratives. This is possible only if subjectivity in the international arena is strengthened, which, in turn, is guaranteed by domestic political unity and a common understanding of national interests.
In addition, Viatrovych noted, issues of national identity, in particular language and church, may become the subject of unjustified concessions during peace negotiations, since for some Ukrainian authorities they are not a value. He noted that for Russia these issues are key, while Ukrainian negotiators may view them as secondary.
“For them, these issues of language, identity, well, most likely, are not of any value. That is, for them, it is some kind of cheap bargaining chip that they are ready to throw away precisely in order to possibly take some steps towards progress, as they believe,” the people’s representative explains.
Recall that the previous day, a meeting of the US and Ukrainian delegations took place in Geneva , during which the parties discussed the updated American peace proposal. The negotiations showed significant progress and agreement on positions on further steps. At the same time, the diplomats changed the “peace project”, reducing it to 19 points .
After the negotiations between the Ukrainian and American delegations in Geneva, the US peace plan for Ukraine has undergone significant changes. According to sources, the document will no longer contain 28 points – it will be shortened and focused only on issues related to bilateral relations between Kyiv and Washington. Other topics, in particular, economic contacts between the US and the Russian Federation, are being moved to separate formats – US-Russia and US-EU.
Earlier, the Russian dictator’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov reported that the Kremlin had not received official information about negotiations involving the United States, Ukraine, and European countries in Geneva. This means that Russia is not yet planning to hold talks with the American delegation on Ukraine.
