Kremlin special representative Kirill Dmitriev arrived in the United States for talks with the administration of President Donald Trump amid new American sanctions against Russia.

This was reported by CNN, citing its own sources, Ukrinform reports.

Dmitriev, who heads the Russian Direct Investment Fund and also serves as Moscow’s special envoy, is scheduled to meet with Trump administration officials to discuss the state of bilateral relations between the United States and Russia.

To this end, the American side temporarily lifted sanctions against Dmitriev so that he could obtain a visa to enter the country.

The visit comes amid growing concern in Washington over the Kremlin’s refusal to end its war in Ukraine. President Trump earlier canceled a planned meeting with Vladimir Putin in Budapest.

On the eve of the US imposed restrictions against the two largest Russian oil companies – Rosneft and Lukoil – and called on Moscow to agree to an immediate cessation of hostilities.

It was also previously reported that US President Donald Trump has chosen a middle option for sanctions against Russia , which focuses on the energy sector rather than a complete blockade of the industry. This decision paves the way for further steps, including the transfer of Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine.
