“Do not be indifferent”: rallies against attacks on Ukrainians were held in 22 cities in Poland

Today, August 9, demonstrations against the increasing cases of verbal and physical violence against Ukrainians took place in 22 Polish cities. The actions were held under the slogan “Do not be indifferent” and aimed to express solidarity with people experiencing violence and discrimination.

In most cities, demonstrations began after 5:00 p.m. The nationwide campaign was organized by the Committee to Defend Democracy.

Organizers said the protests were a response to increasing instances of verbal and physical attacks on people because of their origin, language or appearance, while also showing solidarity with those facing violence and discrimination.

The August 9 protests were preceded by a demonstration on August 7 under the slogan “My Poland Does Not Beat, Insult, or Incite.” At that time, the organizers submitted a petition to the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Administration demanding that decisive measures be taken against brutal attacks on Ukrainian citizens. It was signed by over 11,000 people.

The slogan “Do not be indifferent” is associated with a speech by former Auschwitz prisoner Marian Tursky, which he delivered on January 27, 2020, during events marking the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camp.

Tursky called for not to tolerate the cruel treatment of minorities, human rights violations, and historical lies.

The article also notes that Ukrainian Ambassador to Poland Vasyl Bodnar previously spoke about the decline in support for Ukrainians among the Polish population. According to him, certain political forces are using the topic of Ukrainian immigrants to mobilize the electorate and achieve their own goals.

Earlier it was reported that a Ukrainian girl and her boyfriend were brutally beaten in a store in Poland . According to the victim’s mother, the reason for the attack was her Ukrainian accent. Both were injured and hospitalized.
