About 60 people were detained at a government-sanctioned Communist Party rally in Moscow. The arrests began after the rally participants began chanting anti-government slogans.
This is reported by The Moscow Times.
The action was dedicated to the anniversary of the events of October 1993, when, during a confrontation between President Boris Yeltsin and parliament, Russian tanks shelled the House of Soviets in Moscow.
According to media reports, about 2,000 people came to the rally.
During the rally, participants began chanting “For fair elections,” “Down with the Tsar,” “No to political repression,” “Freedom to political prisoners,” as well as slogans against the pro-government United Russia party. After that, security forces began detaining people.
According to preliminary data, 26 representatives of the Communist Party of Ukraine, about 30 members of the Yabluko party, and several other activists were detained.
Eyewitnesses also reported the use of force during detentions.
“We see: a person is lying, and people are around her. And the law enforcement officers are kicking her. In the end, the person was pulled out. There, they grabbed the woman by the hair, she was screaming. There is horror, everything is in the traditions of 1993,” eyewitnesses said.
The Communist Party of the Soviet Union announced that they were working to release the detainees. Some of the people were later released.
Previously, United Russia received a record number of seats in the State Duma of the Russian Federation , while the Communist Party of the Russian Federation took second place in terms of votes.
