On the night of October 16, a massive drone attack paralyzed all four Moscow airports. More than 20 planes heading to the Russian capital were diverted to other airfields. Explosions also occurred in Vladimir, Smolensk and Ryazan, and one person was injured in the Rostov region.
This was reported by the Russian Telegram channel Astra.
Rosaviatsia explained the restrictions on the arrival and departure of flights as security reasons. The restrictions affected Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Zhukovsky, and Sheremetyevo airports.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin repeatedly reported overnight that drones had been shot down as they approached the city. According to his morning statement, from 11:00 p.m. on October 15 to 8:00 a.m. on October 16, Russian air defenses allegedly destroyed 94 drones. Emergency services are working at the sites of the debris. The official did not release information about the consequences of the attack in Moscow.

According to the Telegram channel Supernova+, seven planes took off from the Chkalovsky airfield near Moscow during the attack. This airfield serves government needs. The channel’s authors suggested that the Kremlin could have been evacuated due to the threat of an attack, but there is no official confirmation of this version.
Other regions of Russia have also been hit. The Yaroslavl region has declared the highest level of danger due to drones, and traffic leaving Yaroslavl towards Moscow has been temporarily stopped.
In Vladimir, local Telegram channels reported air defenses and multiple explosions. One possible target is the Yandex data center, which was already under attack this month.
In addition, there were reports of injuries in the Rostov region. Governor Yuriy Slyusar said that a man was injured in the Aksai district. According to him, the drone crash also damaged production and warehouse facilities, where a fire broke out.
In addition to the Aksai district, the Chertkovsky district and the city of Bataysk were hit. Explosions and air defense operations were also reported in Smolensk and Ryazan.
The governor of the Leningrad region, Alexander Drozdenko, said that four drones were shot down over the region overnight. An air alert was declared there.
As a reminder, the day before, President Volodymyr Zelensky, after a three-day break, which Kyiv adhered to at the request of the United States, stated that Ukraine would resume attacks on Russian oil refineries because Moscow had not stopped its attacks on Ukrainian energy.
