What is known about the war in Sudan?
The armed conflict in Sudan has been ongoing since April 15, 2023. Fighting began between the regular Sudanese army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) commanded by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
These forces used to cooperate, but their leaders have come into conflict over power and the future of the country’s military structures. One of the main reasons for the confrontation was the issue of integrating the RSF into the regular army.
The preconditions for war were formed after the overthrow of long-time ruler Omar al-Bashir in 2019 and the military coup in 2021. Attempts at a political settlement failed to prevent armed confrontation.
Fighting has engulfed much of the country, including the Darfur and Kordofan regions. The parties are using artillery and drones, and civilians are suffering from shelling, violence and the destruction of infrastructure.
The war has caused a massive humanitarian crisis. According to international organizations, millions of Sudanese have been forced to flee their homes, a significant portion of the population is in need of humanitarian assistance, and some regions are experiencing acute shortages of food and medical services.
The exact death toll from the war remains unknown. The conflict has also led to large-scale population displacement and has made it difficult to deliver humanitarian aid to areas of active fighting. Attempts to negotiate a lasting ceasefire have failed to end the conflict.
We will remind you that almost fifty people, including high-ranking officials, died in Sudan as a result of the crash of an AN military transport plane.
Earlier, a cargo plane carrying Russians was shot down in Sudan . The military said it had destroyed an Antonov plane that the Sudanese military had been using as a bomber, but judging by the wreckage, it appeared to be a Russian Il-76.
