During his visits to Belarus, US Special Presidential Envoy John Cole discussed not only political issues with self-proclaimed President Alexander Lukashenko, but also weight loss and an American anti-obesity drug.
The Wall Street Journal reports this, citing sources.
Cole, a lawyer who previously represented Donald Trump in cases against social media, initially traveled to Belarus at the request of the US State Department to secure the release of a political prisoner holding an American passport. He subsequently visited Minsk repeatedly to negotiate the release of other political prisoners, although he admitted that he had little prior knowledge of the region.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Minsk attempted to establish contacts with Washington. After Trump’s second inauguration, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry contacted the State Department through a channel typically used for military consultations, declaring its interest in improving relations. Russia and Belarus, according to the publication, were willing to release prisoners in order to establish dialogue with Trump’s inner circle.
Lukashenko, according to the WSJ, shared advice on communicating with Vladimir Putin, facilitated the US-Russia summit in Alaska, and advised Washington on how to interact with Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, even offering to host him in Belarus.
Minsk, meanwhile, expected sanctions against certain Belarusian companies to be eased and assistance with repairs to the presidential plane. The Trump administration, meanwhile, viewed Belarus as a potential role model for the Kremlin if it helped end the war against Ukraine.
During meetings, Lukashenko treated the American envoy to traditional dishes and vodka, often raising toasts, forcing Cole to discreetly dispose of the drinks. During one visit in June, Lukashenko noticed that the American had lost weight, and Cole joked about using Zepbound, an injectable anti-obesity drug from the American company Eli Lilly.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Lukashenko has repeatedly expressed interest in weight-loss drugs, and his entourage encouraged him to work on his weight. The American delegation even considered arranging for Lukashenko to access Zepbound, but the publication does not specify whether the drug was ultimately handed over.
