During the Kursk operation, the Russian army lost 77 thousand occupiers

August 6 marked a year since the start of the Kursk operation of the Ukrainian Defense Forces, which was a response to Russia’s attempt to launch a new offensive campaign in the north of Slobozhanshchina.

The results of the deal were announced by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, General Alexander Syrsky.

According to him, Ukrainian troops were able to break through the enemy’s defense, enter deep into the enemy’s rear and disrupt the logistical support of the occupiers. During the most active period of the operation, the Ukrainian Armed Forces controlled up to 1,300 square kilometers of the territory of the Kursk region of the Russian Federation.

“The operation forced Russia to shift significant reserves to the north, which weakened its pressure on other sections of the front. We did not allow the enemy to carry out an offensive and created a buffer zone. It is thanks to this that Sumy and Kharkov remain free,” Syrsky emphasized.

During the year of military operations in the area of responsibility of the Kursk group, the losses of the Russian army amounted to:

• more than 77 thousand killed and wounded

• Of these, about 4 thousand are citizens of the DPRK

• 7,236 units of equipment were destroyed or damaged, including:

  • 11 tanks

  • 1083 armored vehicles

  • 907 artillery systems

  • 1 plane, 3 helicopters

  • 15 air defense systems

  • 2795 units of motor transport

Ukrainian defenders also captured 1,018 Russian soldiers , which allowed for exchanges and the return home of hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers, including those who had been in captivity since 2022.

According to the commander-in-chief, Ukrainian forces still maintain a presence in the Glushkovsky district of the Kursk region , holding back part of the Russian offensive group.

“The enemy was able to restore some of the lost positions only after the DPRK units were overthrown, the group was strengthened, and aerial bombs were used en masse,” added Syrsky.

He thanked all Ukrainian soldiers who took part in the operation and continue to conduct it.

It should be added that as of the end of April, since the beginning of the Kursk operation, the Russian army has lost more than 60 thousand soldiers in the operational zone of the Kursk group of forces.

Subsequently, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine stated that the Kursk direction had become the most effective for ensuring the “exchange fund”. Thus, from August 6, 2024 to May 25, 2025 , in the area of the Kursk operation, the Defense Forces of Ukraine captured 971 servicemen of the Russian Armed Forces.
