Easing US sanctions against Russia: how much can the Kremlin “earn” from Trump’s decision

The US has said that easing sanctions on Russian oil could bring Russia additional revenue. According to estimates, Moscow could receive up to $2 billion.
This is reported by Reuters .
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant noted that the relevant decisions of President Donald Trump’s administration will allow other countries, including Japan and South Korea, to purchase sanctioned oil.
“The maximum additional revenue for Russia as a result of such steps would be about $2 billion,” said Scott Bessent.
According to him, these decisions are also aimed at curbing the rise in prices on global energy markets.
At the same time, according to journalists, Russia is not yet reaping the full benefits of rising world oil prices amid the war in the Middle East. The reason is limited opportunities to increase physical export volumes.
In particular, oil shipments from Russia’s main western ports in March could drop to 1.7 million barrels per day compared to the planned 1.8 million.
Russian crude oil and petroleum product exports fell to their lowest level since the start of the war in 2022 in February, a trend that continues.
The decline in exports is linked, in particular, to a reduction in the loading of the Novorossiysk port, which in March may fall by half compared to February due to drone strikes and weather conditions.
It is expected that oil and gas revenues of the Russian federal budget in March could decrease by 52% to $6.4 billion compared to the same period in 2025.
At the same time, revenues from oil and gas remain key to the Russian budget and account for about 25% of its revenues.
By the way, amid the escalation of the conflict over Iran and disruptions to oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, Russian budget revenues have increased sharply. According to analysts, additional revenues could reach up to $150 million per day .
It is worth adding that the US has eased sanctions for 30 days and allowed the purchase of Russian oil and petroleum products that are already being transported by sea. This only concerns raw materials that are on tankers en route.
