Ebola death toll rises sharply in Congo: more than 930 people have died

In the Democratic Republic of Congo, the number of victims of the Ebola virus outbreak has risen to 930 people.

According to the Ministry of Health of the Democratic Republic of Congo, as of July 19, 2,344 cases of the disease have been confirmed in the country, of which 930 have been fatal.
In the last 24 hours alone, 37 deaths were recorded – the highest daily figure since the beginning of the outbreak.
The epidemic, which began on May 15 in the east of the country, is already being called the largest and most dynamic Ebola outbreak in recorded history.
According to the World Health Organization, the epicenter of the infection has become Ituri province, from where the virus has spread to neighboring Uganda. Jason Asher, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, warned of the risk of a large-scale humanitarian crisis.
The outbreak was caused by the Bundibugyo virus, a rare variant of the Ebola virus for which there is currently no approved vaccine or treatment.
The situation is complicated by problems with the functioning of the medical system. Due to threats to the safety of doctors, the provision of assistance in the most affected province of Ituri remains limited.
At least 12 attacks on medical facilities and ambulances have been recorded since the outbreak began. In addition, many medical workers have resigned due to long delays in salary payments.
According to official figures, 36 health workers who became infected while performing their duties have already died from Ebola.
In particular, 724 patients are currently in isolation and undergoing treatment.
It was previously reported that an Ebola outbreak in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo, which initially claimed the lives of 65 people , later led to flight cancellations, increased international restrictions, and other consequences due to the rapid spread of the virus .
