Edits from Magyar: Budapest insists on Ukraine’s gradual accession to the EU
Hungary has opposed Ukraine’s accelerated accession to the EU. Peter Magyar blocks the wording on accelerating negotiations with Ukraine.
The Prime Minister of Hungary announced this on the social network X.
It is known that he achieved changes to the final declaration of the EU summit, excluding from the document the wording regarding Ukraine’s accelerated accession to the European Union.
According to him, this decision was made at the last moment, when the text of the document was already being agreed upon.
“Regarding the process of Ukraine’s accession to the EU, on my initiative, the clause on accelerating accession was removed from the text at the last moment. It was not easy,” the country’s Prime Minister said.
He also emphasized that after amendments are made to the declaration, it can be supported by all member states of the European Union, which, he said, happens infrequently.
In addition, Budapest expresses reservations about opening new negotiation clusters within the framework of Ukraine’s accession process to the EU.
The Prime Minister of Hungary claims that some other European Union countries hold the same opinion.
He emphasizes that he supports Ukraine’s accession to the EU, but this should happen gradually, after all necessary conditions are met.
During the summit in Brussels, Magyar had a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
In particular, according to diplomatic sources, Zelensky expressed hope that Hungary would support the opening of the next negotiation clusters sooner than currently expected.

It was previously reported that Hungarian Minister for EU Affairs Anita Orban stated that the negotiation process for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union may be suspended if Kyiv does not fulfill agreements on ensuring the rights of the Hungarian minority in Transcarpathia.
The European Union is also close to releasing €6.6 billion from the European Peace Facility , which has been frozen for more than two years due to Hungary’s stance. Despite Budapest’s prolonged blocking, EU member states are looking for mechanisms to resume funding for military aid to Ukraine.
