Environmentalists sound the alarm: after Zaporizhia, locusts moved to Kryvyi Rih, Dnipro and Odessa
The massive invasion of Egyptian locusts, which began in Zaporizhia, is rapidly spreading to other regions of Ukraine, covering Kryvyi Rih, Dnipro and even coastal Odessa. Swarms of insects are already threatening crops and landscapes in these regions, creating a real threat to agriculture and the ecosystem.
The reason for the spread of locusts is favorable weather conditions – high air temperature, prolonged drought, as well as constant military operations that are being conducted in the regions. A significant role is also played by the increased areas due to the disaster at the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station and abandoned lands near the combat zone.
Experts attribute the massive reproduction and migration of locusts to the disruption of the natural balance due to the war, which has caused large-scale changes in landscapes, soil contamination and disruption of natural barriers for pests. Military operations in the southern and eastern regions of Ukraine have led to changes in climatic and ecological conditions, which have created an ideal environment for locust reproduction.
Environmentalists emphasize that without urgent measures to control and combat the locusts, the threat to crops and natural ecosystems will increase significantly. They call on the authorities to strengthen monitoring and involve specialized services to contain the spread of the pest in order to avoid a large-scale ecological and economic catastrophe.
As a reminder, a massive locust invasion has been recorded in the Dnipropetrovsk region, approaching from the dried-up Kakhovka reservoir. The insects have already hit fields in Kherson, Zaporizhia, Odessa and Vinnytsia regions. Due to the heat and drought, the locusts are rapidly multiplying, attacking sunflower crops and can destroy up to 100% of the harvest.
