Estonia has begun building a “Baltic Defense Line” on the border with Russia

Estonia has begun building the Baltic Defense Line in the southeastern part of the country on the border with Russia.

Anti-tank ditches are being dug along some sections of the border with Russia. By the end of 2025, Estonia plans to build 28 bunkers and dozens of warehouses.

The first, test, section of the Baltic defense line is being built in Estonia. An anti-tank ditch is being dug in the area between the border fence and the border posts.

“The ditch is four meters wide and three meters deep,” said Lieutenant Colonel Ainar Afanasiev, commander of the engineer unit of the Estonian Defense Forces division.

This year, almost 4.5 million euros were allocated for the construction of defense facilities.

“There is no immediate military threat, but readiness is key,” the Estonian Defense Ministry said.

Fortifications are being built along the border in accordance with the analysis and needs of the Estonian Defence Forces. In peacetime, they will remain border infrastructure and contribute to border security.

The Finnish parliament previously approved the withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention on the prohibition of landmines . In the future, the Defence Forces will be allowed to use such weapons.

By the way, German intelligence has received evidence of Russia’s preparation for aggression against NATO . Thus, the aggressor country plans to test the effectiveness of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.
