Estonia has begun a major fortification of its eastern border with Russia, building an anti-tank ditch and planning hundreds of bunkers. At the same time, the opposition Isamaa party has launched an initiative to completely close the border with Russia due to security threats growing amid military exercises by Russia and Belarus.
This is reported by ERR .
The Estonian General Staff explained that in the northeast of the country, the Narva River is a natural barrier, in the east – Lake Peipus, but the southeastern area requires additional protection. It is there that an almost 40-kilometer anti-tank ditch will be built, and by the end of 2027, another 600 bunkers are planned to be completed. In total, the defense zone will extend 100 km in length and 40 km in depth from the land border.
The Defense Investment Center noted that two strongholds will be built this year – in the north and south-east of Estonia, each of which will include 14 bunkers. The main structures are being built in dense forests, which will complicate the possible advance of the enemy.
The defensive ditches will also become an element of the border surveillance system. The project was developed taking into account Ukraine’s experience in resisting Russian aggression. Tetrahedrons (“dragon’s teeth”) and barbed wire will be installed along the ditch.
In parallel, the opposition party Isamaa submitted to parliament a bill on the complete closure of the border with Russia. The leader of the political force emphasized that the initiative was caused by the aggravation of the security situation, in particular, the military exercises “West” in Russia and Belarus, as well as Moscow’s provocative actions against NATO countries. If the bill is supported by parliament, the final decision will be made by the government.
Previously,Estonia began building the Baltic Defense Line in the southeastern part of the country on the border with Russia.
By the way, German intelligence has received evidence of Russia’s preparation for aggression against NATO . Thus, the aggressor country plans to test the effectiveness of Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.
Recall that recent satellite images have revealed the large-scale construction of five secret military facilities related to Russia’s nuclear forces. Analysts warn: Moscow is expanding its nuclear infrastructure amid escalation in Europe. The facilities have multi-level security, special bunkers and logistics for transporting warheads.
