EU approves opening of first negotiation cluster for Ukraine and Moldova

All European Union countries have supported the opening of the first cluster of negotiations on Ukraine and Moldova’s accession to the EU. This decision paves the way for a new stage in the negotiation process on the two countries’ future membership in the European Union.

This is stated in a statement from the EU press service.

The first negotiation cluster covers the basic issues on which the European integration process is built. In particular, it concerns the rule of law, the judicial system, the rights and freedoms of citizens, and democratic institutions.

The European Union emphasized that Ukraine and Moldova have done significant work to advance towards membership, and the current decision is a recognition of this progress.

“Today we are starting negotiations on the foundations of the accession process, including justice, freedom and fundamental rights. We have seen the hard work of these countries and we are rewarding it with a clear path forward,” the EU noted.

In fact, this is another step for Ukraine on its path to joining the European Union. The opening of negotiation clusters is one of the key stages of the membership procedure and indicates Brussels’ readiness to move forward in negotiations with Kyiv.

Previously, “Pryamiy” reported that the European Union believes that, with sufficient political will, Ukraine can complete technical negotiations on EU accession in about four years. At the same time, European officials note that about 15% of the reforms stipulated in the agreed membership preparation plan have been implemented so far.

Slovakia also confirmed its readiness to support the opening of the first and subsequent clusters of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
