The European Union has begun discussing the possibility of temporarily limiting the veto right for new member states.
The Guardian writes about this.
Brussels fears that after the EU’s enlargement, individual states may block important decisions of the Union – just as Hungary has done in recent years.
Therefore, the EU is considering an option under which new members will not have the right to block decisions in the field of foreign policy, sanctions, or taxes for a certain period of time.
According to the publication, the first country to which such a mechanism could be applied is Montenegro – it is currently closest to joining the EU.
The European Union itself admits that the idea is quite controversial, so it is only a temporary restriction.
At the same time, the EU is increasingly saying that without internal reforms, the Union will find it difficult to work after a new enlargement.
The article also mentions Ukraine separately. Brussels considers it a special case due to the war, the scale of the future recovery, and its important role for European security.
