The European Union has officially extended sectoral sanctions against Russia for six months.

This is stated on the website of the Council of the EU.

On Monday, June 30, the EU Council extended restrictive measures due to the ongoing aggression by the Russian Federation for another 6 months, until January 31, 2026.

“We will continue to pressure Moscow to stop the war in Ukraine. Every sanction weakens Russia’s ability to wage war,” said Kaia Kallas.

It is worth noting that sectoral sanctions were first introduced by the EU in 2014. They were significantly expanded from February 2022 in response to the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine.

Sectoral sanctions consist of restrictions in the following industries:

  • trade;
  • finance;
  • energy;
  • technologies;
  • dual-use goods;
  • industry;
  • transport;
  • luxury goods.

“As long as the illegal actions of the Russian Federation continue to violate fundamental norms of international law, in particular the prohibition on the use of force, it is appropriate to maintain all measures imposed by the EU in force and to take additional measures if necessary,” the EU Council stressed.

As a reminder, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot expressed hope that the European Commission will present the 18th package of sanctions against Russia by the end of June.

By the way, the European Union is considering the possibility of disconnecting more than 20 Russian banks from the international SWIFT system as part of a new package of sanctions against Russia.

It was previously reported that the 18th package of sanctions from the EU will include companies from China, the UAE, and Hong Kong .
