EU fails to overcome Orban’s veto on 90 billion euros for Ukraine
The decision on a €90 billion loan for Ukraine has not yet been made – Hungary’s veto remains in effect, but the EU expects a compromise to be found in the near future.
This is reported by BNR News.
According to a diplomatic source, European Council President António Costa held a conversation with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
“I expect that a decision on a loan of 90 billion euros for Ukraine will be made very soon,” the interlocutor noted.
According to him, Orban was reminded of the need to adhere to the agreements that European leaders agreed to back in December.
“The loan for Ukraine has been agreed and will not be reviewed,” the source emphasized.
The EU also draws attention to the rise in energy prices due to the situation in the Middle East, but emphasizes that the current level is significantly lower than in 2022.
At the upcoming summit, EU leaders plan to discuss the war in Iran, the situation in Ukraine, and the impact of the energy crisis. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to speak via video.
In addition, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was invited to the meeting – this will be his last participation in a European Council meeting.
It should be noted that earlier the Bulgarian National Radio reported that the European Union had approved a loan for Ukraine in the amount of 90 billion euros, allegedly overcoming Hungary’s veto.
