European Union leaders at a summit in Cyprus agreed to begin the first phase of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the bloc. Negotiations are expected to start in the coming weeks or months.
This is reported by Bloomberg .
According to the source, European leaders concluded that the preliminary conditions for starting the negotiation process have been met, which paves the way for the first stage of Ukraine’s accession to the EU.
At the same time, a specific date for Ukraine’s full membership has not yet been determined, as the accession process could take years.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed the need for the country’s full membership in the European Union.
“Ukraine does not need symbolic membership in the EU,” said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
He also emphasized that Ukraine does not support options for alternative or simplified entry with limited rights.
“Ukraine is defending itself and, of course, is also defending Europe,” Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.
According to information, discussions intensified after Hungary lifted the block on financial aid to Ukraine, which allowed for progress in negotiations with Brussels.
At the same time, some EU countries insist on a gradual approach to enlargement and an assessment of Ukraine’s compliance with established criteria. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda stated the importance of an approach based on achievements.
“I see 2030 as an approximate date,” said Gitanas Nauseda.
Despite the support of individual countries, the EU is also considering various formats for Ukraine’s integration, but the Ukrainian side insists on full membership.
By the way, the head of Poland’s foreign ministry, Radosław Sikorski, stated that he is against Ukraine’s accelerated accession to the European Union.
Earlier, EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Cos stated that despite the fact that Ukraine is an important partner of the European Union, accession to the bloc by 2027 is impossible .
