EU lifts ban on Russian sable fur imports — media

The European Union has exempted Russian sable fur from sanctions restrictions, allowing its import into the bloc. The relevant exception was included in the 21st package of sanctions against Russia, which was agreed last week.

The European Commission explained that this decision is due to Russia’s dominance in the global sable fur market. According to Brussels, European producers have limited opportunities to find alternative suppliers of this raw material.
According to the publication, an exception to the sanctions was actively lobbied by Italy and Greece, which remain the largest buyers of Russian sable fur among EU countries.
Sable fur is traditionally used in the production of luxury goods. Products made from it can cost tens, and sometimes hundreds of thousands of euros. According to the Russian auction house Soyuzpushnina, companies from Greece, Italy, China and Russia remain among the key buyers of this fur.
At the same time, the ban on the import of finished fur products from Russia into the European Union remains in force. Restrictions on the export to the Russian Federation of a number of luxury items, including diamonds and caviar, also continue to apply.
The decision to ease sanctions on sable fur comes amid discussions in the EU about the future of the fur industry. The European Commission is considering various options for regulating the industry, from a complete ban on fur farming to stricter animal welfare requirements.
It was previously reported that the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the European Union (Coreper) reached a political agreement on the 21st package of sanctions against Russia , which provides for new restrictions against the Russian economy and individual sectors.
